'War Horse' ad hits Television
Opening Christmas Day
War Horse "War Horse" is about to begin its charge on to United States movie screens, with the television advertisement now released.

The Steven Spielberg-directed adaptation of Michael Morpurgo's book of the same name opens in US theatres on Christmas Day.

Trailers paint a clear picture of a Spielberg epic, with spectacular cinematography, and pundits have widely tipped it as Oscar material.

The movie is set during World War 1 and follows the war campaign of Joey, who was sold into military service.

The young boy who trains him is determined to be reunited with Joey and, once old enough, sets off for mainland Europe to find his horse.

Broadway Debut After a Life of Opera
Rosalind Ellis
The ageless mezzo-soprano Rosalind Elias had never heard a note of Stephen Sondheim’s score for “Follies” when her agent first approached her about auditioning for the small, poignant role of Heidi Schiller, which she is now playing to acclaim in the popular revival at the Marquis Theater on Broadway.

Ms. Elias was no Sondheim neophyte. She sang Mrs. Lovett in the New York City Opera’s 1984 production of “Sweeney Todd” and appeared as the sardonic grandmother Madame Armfeldt in a production of “A Little Night Music” in Hawaii. But she knew of “Follies” only vaguely and could not imagine what role could be right for someone “at my stage,” as she put it during a recent interview in her Manhattan apartment, where she lives with her husband of 42 years, Zuhayr Moghrabi, a lawyer and law professor. A Card Game Played With High Stakes
A Felony in Blue or Death by Poker
When you arrive at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe in the East Village, the usher hands you a program and a few extra photocopied sheets. One shows a familiar face: that of the usher himself, the playwright-director-actor Rome Neal, currently playing Thelonious Monk in a one-man show at the Moldy Fig, a jazz club a few blocks away. He’s also happy to point you toward the bathroom, which is plastered with posters for “Rome Neal’s Banana Puddin’,” a monthly jazz jam session and open-mike night at the poets cafe.

Just past Mr. Neal, perched at the bar, is a stocky older fellow selling books. (“Three for $20! What a deal!”) That would be Miguel Algarín, a founder of the Nuyorican Poets Cafe in 1973 and the discoverer of many of the authors in the volumes he is peddling. If you’d rather soak up the cafe’s history without the hard sell, another founding poet, Lois Elaine Griffith, is sitting quietly at the other end of the bar. More info...

A To-Do About a Surprise 'Much Ado' From Joss Whedon
Joss Whedon
Having recently wrapped principal photography on “The Avengers,” a big-budget, big-stakes action film about that Marvel Comics superhero team, Joss Whedon has surely earned the right to kick back on his couch, eat bonbons and catch up on daytime television for a few weeks. Instead, Mr. Whedon, the overachieving producer of fantasy television shows like “Buffy,” “Firefly” and “Dollhouse,” has once again thrown audiences for a loop by announcing that he has just finished shooting a low-budget adaptation of Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing” that was filmed in 12 days.
